The Leviathan took a heavy blow from the destroyer, one powerful enough to mess with the artificial gravity for a fraction of a moment. As they listed to port, the ship corrected almost instantly, causing everyone to jostle in their seats. Victoria winced, checking the damage report on her terminal.

They suffered minor damage, but it surprised her they’d be attacking with such force when they had men attempting to board the vessel. Marines were en route to the section of the ship where the shuttle attached to the hull, prepared to repel the boarders. They might not be able to get in … but if they did, security had to put them down fast.

We can’t risk a bunch of people running around here getting lost.

“Nick,” Victoria said, “what’s going on with the evasive maneuvers? What happened just now?”

“They’re throwing everything they’ve got at us,” Nick replied, “and they’re fast too. That destroyer can really move. Way more impressive than the other one we faced.”

“Buy us some distance,” Victoria said, “how close are those other ships?”

“They’ll be in striking range in fifteen minutes.” Nick shrugged. “I’m not too worried about them.”

Madeline spoke up. “I’m picking up increased signal activity from the space station. Looks like they’re sending more fighters … and another destroyer’s leaving the station.” She turned in her seat. “That makes four capital ships and at least six more fighters heading toward the surface.”

“What the hell did you stir up down there, Warren?” Victoria sighed. “Let’s keep them focused on us for now. Deploy rockets to the station. Fire on that thing and see if we can’t convince them we’re the real threat.”

“I’m receiving a hail,” Madeline replied. “From the space station.”

“Belay that order,” Victoria said. “Send it down to my terminal.” She waited to see the signal pop up and cranked it on.

“What is the meaning of this attack?” A male voice barked at her, tinged with rage. “How dare you come into our sovereign territory … attack our vessels … trespass on our planet! You filthy raiders! Surrender immediately and you might enjoy life in prison. Persist in this unwarranted attack and we’ll ensure you are all executed for high treason!”

“Not going to surrender,” Victoria said. “But you can fall back and give us some space. We’ll leave soon and you won’t have to lose a ship.” She muted the com. “Hit the destroyer while we’re talking. See if you can’t slap them hard enough to get through the shields. This contact is just a distraction.”

“Still want those rockets?” Nick asked.

“Yep, wait for my word to deploy those though.” Victoria turned off the mute. “Do you accept those terms?”

“You do not dictate to us! You are the criminals here!”

The Leviathan opened fire, this time every beam striking the side of the target. Shields flared as the destroyer began to spin in an apparent effort to spread the damage out. A green grid appeared around their vessel then burst as if it were digital glass shattering in all directions.
